How To STOP The Most Common Plumbing Emergencies.

Plumbing emergencies can be messy! If you have a: broken pipe, water heater leaking, overflowing toilet, or clogged drain call a professional plumber immediately and then follow these easy steps to avoid major damage to your home and belongings.

Broken Pipe: If you have a broken pipe, and water is leaking in your home, it is imperative to locate your main water shutoff valve in order to turn off your water. The main shutoff valve is usually located in your garage. Shutting off the water will help you avoid major flooding and water damage to your home.

Water Heater Leaking: If you notice water leaking in your garage it is most likely coming from your water heater.

To stop your water heater from leaking shut off the water supply going to your water heater. This valve is most likely a lever style valve located above the water heater.

Shutting off the water to the heater will help you evade a major flood in your garage and home.

Overflowing Toilet: There is truly nothing worse than an overflowing or backed up toilet! The sooner you call a professional, the sooner you will be done with the problem! While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, look for a valve located on the wall behind your toilet. Turn this valve clockwise until it stops; this will shut the water off to your toilet and temporarily stop the overflowing.

Clogged Drains: If you notice all the drains in your home are draining slowly and water is backing up into your tub, you probably have a sewer main line blockage. In this situation you want to locate your home’s “clean out”. This is typically located in the front of your home. Take the cap off the, “clean out” and let the sewage water drain into your yard rather than your home!

Plumbing emergencies are never fun. The most important step is to call a professional licensed plumber as soon as possible. These are only temporary solutions to help you avoid major damage and will not fix or repair any of these plumbing situations. These steps are designed to protect your home and belongings. A professional plumber is needed to remedy and fix each problem.
